In Plain Terms
What is ISO 9001?
It is the standard for running a business that delivers what it promised, every time. It does not tell you what your product should be, and it sets no quality level you have to hit. What it asks is whether you have a repeatable way of doing the work, recording what happened, noticing when something goes wrong, and fixing the cause rather than the symptom.
It is the most widely held of the ISO management system standards — which is why, when a client or a tender asks whether you are “ISO certified”, this is almost always the one they mean.
Why is ISO 9001 important?
Before it existed, a buyer had two choices: audit every supplier themselves, or take their word for it. A company with four hundred suppliers could not do the first and could not afford the second.
ISO 9001 solved that one problem — a single agreed set of requirements, checked by an independent body, that any buyer anywhere can rely on without doing the checking themselves. That is why it appears in tender documents and supplier questionnaires more than any other standard. It is not asked for because quality is fashionable. It is asked for because it saves the person asking a great deal of work.
